lettuce is a free-floating aquatic plant and is one of the more
popular water plants used for garden ponds.
Water lettuce
and water
hyacinths float on the surface of the water and are
often used as a source of filtration by using these water plants
as a vegetable filter. It grows quite quickly and cleans the water
very well. The leaves are unique with tiny hairs with light green
leaves up to 6 inches long with long veins running through the
leaf. Water lettuce can be aggressive and is banned from certain
states in the United States. In Canada there are no restrictions
as this is a tropical plant and cannot survive the winter in our
climate.
Water lettuce used in ponds are great for filtration and
for fish to spawn and lay their eggs on with their long hanging
roots submersed beneath the leaves.. When water lettuce begin to
reproduce simply discard them to keep their population under
control. Use the discarded water lettuce as compost or give them
away to friends who have a garden pond. Water lettuce is a
great way at reducing algae blooms as it competes against algae
preventing large algae blooms. Water lettuce, water hyacinths and
barley will help fight algae problems.
A note to remember for any water plant or fish in fact, they
should never be introduced to local streams or rivers as they can
clog up waterways and hurt the environment and ecosystem.
